The Making of My Blog – Part 4

Other than being in Ottawa now on my cooking class, this trip is significant in another way. It is important because it will be the first field test of using my Dell Axim Pocket PC to post to my blog – exactly the way that I’m will be doing this in Italy this fall.

If I can’t get this to work reliably in Ottawa (where there are no language or cultural issues to contend with), I’ll be in big trouble trying to get thing to work in Italy. Before leaving Vancouver for this trip, I downloaded a list of all wireless “hotspots” (i.e. public locations where I can get wireless Internet access) and I am here now in a Timothy’s café in Ottawa posting these messages.

It’s important that the wireless thing work as my Axim can only connect to the Internet through a wireless connection. I am considering buying a modem for the Axim so I can have an alternate way of getting Internet access but I’ll have to asses that option later on. I’m already pushing the limit of carrying enough consumer electronics in my suitcase.

As I had stated above, the field test for using my Dell PDA for posting was done on my recent trip to Ottawa. The results were fairly positive and I was able to post the three articles (above) as well as pictures to go along with the articles.

The one issue that I ran into was that getting signup up initially to use the wireless provider (Telus) took several attempts before it would accept my login ID. However once this was completed, the login process worked properly on the subsequent days.

The biggest risk that I anticipate is that if I have any kind of hardware problem with the Axim, I may not be able to recover from it so if this were to happen on the road, I will have to fall back to the manual process that I have done on previous trip.

Baring any unforeseen problems, I think that things are in good shape for our next trip.
